Hooks is an electroacoustic composition built around a single, simple pattern formed from three interrelated sound objects. Together, they create a unified impulse – sustain – arrest gesture that serves as the structural and perceptual foundation of the work.
A short sonic impulse initiates the pattern, triggering a second, continuous noise that functions as its spectral sustain. This sustained element is a timbral extension of the initial attack. A third, brief sound then interrupts and terminates the gesture, completing the cycle with decisive arrest. The overall duration of each pattern is determined by the length of the sustained noise, making time and structure directly dependent on timbre.
Throughout the composition, this basic unit is explored through transformation. Reverberation and granular processes reshape density, spatial depth, and internal motion, allowing the pattern to unfold into a variety of textures while retaining its recognizable shape.
As the piece evolves, the roles of the three sound objects are continually recontextualized. The impulse and arrest also function as triggers for additional patterns, creating a network of interconnected sonic gestures that branch and interact over time.
Hooks invites deep listening to the relationship between minimal structure, spectral resonance, and variation. The piece was a finalist at the 8th International Competition for Composers “Città di Udine” – TEM in Italy.
